Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides support to schools, higher education institutions, and community-based organizations that engage students, educators, and others in service-learning. Through our higher education grant competitions, Learn and Serve America aims to expand participation in community service and service-learning programs in colleges and universities that serve as civic institutions to meet the human, educational, environmental or public safety needs of their local communities. The 2009 Higher Education grant competition is currently open. We anticipate awarding approximately $9.27 million to selected institutions of higher education, consortia of universities or colleges, or partnerships between higher education institutions and state or non-profit entities. We are excited to announce that President Obama has signed a letter of recognition for those qualifying for a presidential service award. As a result, we are now fulfilling award requests for 2009 service hours. Thank you for your patience as we have managed through this time of transition. We look forward to fulfilling your requests with the updated award package. The PVSA awards program recognizes volunteers for a sustained commitment to service (please see www.presidentialserviceawards.gov for details about becoming a certifying organization and honoring your volunteers). Awardees receive a pin, a letter from President Obama, and a letter from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Since inception in 2003, more than 28,000 organizations have distributed more than 1,477,000 awards to individuals, families, and groups.
The 2009 Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Leadership Summit has been canceled but will resume in 2010. We apologize for the inconvenience but find it necessary due to the current economic challenges and difficulty teams have been facing in raising funds to attend. The new framework for the Summit is exciting and will strengthen you and your team’s ability to successfully complete your projects while engaging your school and community in service learning. We are eager to move forward and hope you can join us next summer for this great service leadership experience.

This is an extraordinary moment in time. As Americans, we have a unique opportunity to come together and solve our nation’s most vexing problems. In this spirit, President Obama is announcing a nationwide service initiative, the beginning of a sustained, collaborative, and focused effort to meet community needs and make service a way of life for all Americans. The Service initiative – spanning 81 days, or just under 12 weeks – will officially kick off June 22 at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service. The White House will make a public announcement in early June, allowing adequate lead time for organizations to post opportunities and prepare to absorb new volunteers. The Service initiative will culminate with a National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11, 2009. The culmination will provide an opportunity to recognize the summer’s accomplishments, honor those who died on September 11, 2001 by serving in their memory, and encourage Americans to make an ongoing commitment to service. For more information email ServiceInitiative@cns.gov.
The annual Dialogue on Democracy is set for Thursday, September 10, 2009 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Capitol Rotunda. Sponsors are the Coalition and Hinckley Institute of Politics. Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating will be our keynote speaker. His bio is attached for your information, and pasted in at the end of the email. Governor Keating won national acclaim in 1995 for his compassionate and professional handling of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City. In the aftermath of the tragedy, he raised more than six million dollars to fund scholarships for the nearly 200 children left with only one or no parents.
